The Digital Archive of Guyanese and Caribbean Festivals, Culture and Literature

Caribbean Research Library
University of Guyana

We are pleased to launch the Digital Archive of Guyanese and Caribbean Festivals, Culture and Literature—a collaborative and partly crowd-sourced archive—at the Caribbean Research Library at the University of Guyana. After all, talking about Carifesta ‘72, other festivals, and forms of cultural expression more broadly calls for thinking about how related materials are preserved and shared. By design, festivals in particular are ephemeral entities that take place at specific moments in time. The documents produced for them (e.g., pamphlets, brochures, performance guides, poems, music scores, and trinkets) and during them by artists and attendees (e.g., songs, personal photographs, sketches, and written reflections) are often tucked away in scrapbooks and shoeboxes at home. We have begun collecting and will continue to gather such items through the “What’s in Your Shoebox” initiative. In addition, individuals can participate in building the archive through our Recollections and Oral History initiatives. If you are in Guyana, be sure to visit the Caribbean Research Library's "Carifesta at 50: The Festival City Exhibition," which will be on view to the public at the Den of the Lions Club of Ruimveldt on Saturday, August 6, 2022, between 8:30 am - 5:30 pm. There will be opportunities on site to share your Carifesta story or collection for the historical record. These materials will be preserved in the new archive, which will be open to the public and researchers alike.

About the Library

The University of Guyana Library was established in 1963 and has now become a dual campus entity with the establishment of the Berbice Campus, situated at Tain, Corentyne which was established in 2000. The University of Guyana Library provides information to serve the teaching, learning and research needs of the Faculties, Colleges, Institutes, Schools and Departments of the University of Guyana. It also strives to meet the needs of the wider local and international communities. The Library also provides a variety of resources which support and extend the teaching, learning and research programmes of the University. The University of Guyana Library is one of three Information Centres which was established as a Legal Deposit entity (Cap. 21:01, Laws of Guyana) for materials published on and about Guyana. Apart from being a legal depository for Guyanese materials, the Library is also a partial depository for the United Nations and several of its arms, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
